New runners: Here’s the thing, and it is something that I would have never understood until I experienced it. Everyone wants you to do well. The guy running the sub 7 minute mile after eating 4 burritos? He wants you to do well. The woman who just finished an Ironman and was so badass she needed a IV at the finish line? She wants you to do well.
I’ve been told since the beginning that the race is only with yourself. When I lined up for my first 1 mile fun run and knew I couldn’t run an entire mile, I didn’t believe it. I thought ‘real runners’ wanted to beat each other. I couldn’t have been further from the truth.
The true battle, like in life, is with yourself. Did you train as hard as you could have? Did you really give it all you had?
And here’s the truly great thing.. if you answered ‘no’ to the above questions you have a chance for redemption. And if you answered yes, then there is going to be someone at the finish with a medal who understands what it took to get there.
